Do silicon patches really reduce wrinkles?

I did an overnight demo and early morning review of Oai Silicon Patches to see if they live up to the hype.

I’d seen a number of silicon patches floating around social media and the skincare junkie I am, I couldn’t resist the claims:

·      Fast, dramatic results after just one session

·      Designed to fit all facial shapes

·      Target problem areas – forehead, crows feet, laugh lines, neck and chest (horray!)

·      95% of consumers said they would use Oia instead of cosmetic procedures. Wow.

Why use silicon patches?

They’ve been used for years by doctors treating scar and burn victims, to help heal the skin underneath.

How does it work?

Wrinkles are formed by lack of collagen and hydration. The patches deprive the skin of oxygen so it has to draw moisture from deeper layers to the surface of the skin. This microclimate of moisture and oxygen just under the patch causes plumping and reduces wrinkles. It also increases blood flow, which helps collagen production. Added bonus – it keeps our skin taut as we sleep, so it helps reduce creasing as we toss and turn.

Instructions

Cleanse, dry, and apply all necessary skincare before patch application. Make sure any other skin products are fully absorbed otherwise the patches may not stick properly! This is key. I actually didn’t apply any of my usual lotions and potions, just to be safe. But...I won’t be doing that again. My tretinoin is too important. So I’d give yourself a good few hours to make sure your skincare has fully absorbed before applying the patches.

I purchased the All in One kit, which is the Mac Daddy. Is contains patches for:

·      Forehead

·      Eye x 2

·      Mouth (laugh lines) x 2

·      Neck

·      Chest

My 49-year old skin definitely suffers from some level of wrinkles in all of these areas but I was particularly interested in the neck and chest. I continuously strive to sleep on my back (successful about 90% of the time) but the chest wrinkles can flare up from time to time. And ‘tech neck’ isn’t doing me any favours, either.

It’s 10:30 pm and I’m ready to go. I applied the full suite of patches to their intended parts. Not a bother, it took about 3 minutes to get them in place. Then, I’m off to visit the sandman.

Removal

It’s 7am and up to start the day. They were all still in place so I easily peeled each patch off. I found it easier to have one hand to hold the skin taut and remove with the other.

Note

The patches be reused up to 15 times, if cared for. They are anti-microbial, so no need to use soap, but you do need to rinse and dry before replacing on plastic sheets.

Results

These puppies work (at least in the short term). I did feel the lines lessened all around. I was very pleased with the chest, neck and even the laugh lines around my mouth. For me, it’s a no-brainer to continue use.  I don’t know yet if there is a long-term benefit but as long as they keep sticking, I’ll keep using. However, (and there’s always a however) it will be costly if I intend to use once or twice a week for the foreseeable future. This kit cost me about $90 - ouch.

One thing I did notice is it that it made sleep uncomfortable, when wearing all 9 patches together. It felt like I was wearing armour. So the next time, I wore just the forehead and the neck. By breaking it up, I found them easier to tolerate with less sleep disruption.

I’m also not convinced the stickiness will last for 15 uses, but we’ll see. I’ll report back (if you’re interested in hearing more).

Final verdict

It’s definitely worth a try. They’re easy to use and I found them effective. Yippee!
